It was a scorching hot day in Hoedspruit. In the morning we had been out doing some work with the Black Mambas (the all female anti poaching unit) and decided to do a quick game drive as we searched for a suitable spot to find some lunch. Usually as the sun climbs higher in the sky and the temperature reaches it's peak, the animals sink into the shade, their burrows, or lay as flat as they can in the grass to escape the midday heat - not ideal for photography. As landy trundled along the rocky landscape we noticed two young elephant bulls in the distance. Their ears flapping ferociously to cool their bodies in the relentless heat as they headed slowly in the direction of a nearby water hole. So we made our way to the waterhole and waited for the bulls to make their merry way over. This boy eventually made his way out of the bush and began to guzzle down as much water as he could without hesitation. The bright midday sun wasn't providing the best light, but by chance the one cloud in the sky muffled the harshness of the sun for just long enough to take this shot. In the meantime his not-so-friendly conspecifit decided to throw his weight around and give us a little bit of a scare, so we decided to leave them both to drink in peace and move on with our day.
